Nate read my whole manuscript even before responding to my inquiry about his availability. He completed his edits on time and made specific, considerate suggestions. Then he advised me on formatting the book for self-publication and helped with the cover design. He was the perfect choice.
— Richard Pool
If you work with Nate, you will be grateful that you did. The man is a wealth of knowledge, skill, and ability. I worked with him on a manuscript that received his special touch and expertise that was served with kindness and professionalism. He brought out the best in me and in my creativity. He will help you bring your best to your project, too.
— Jastrow Hill
Nate provided me with just the right level and type of feedback that I needed. As a result, my non-fiction book manuscript was significantly improved, and without alteration in any way of its basic spirit and character. In addition, it was a pleasure to interact with him by email and phone. I can enthusiastically recommend him as a developmental editor.
— John Lawrence Nazareth

Nate is a master writing coach who makes you and your writing better, guiding you with questions, comments, and challenges, but not directives. He knew what I wanted to say before I did. Nate begins with your story and stays with it taking a broad view of how to help you tell your story, whether it is storyline, theme, grammar, clarity, sentence length, character development, or all of these. At the same time, he doesn’t overwhelm you, but takes you step by step – keeping the joy of writing first. Throughout Nate was straightforward and a pleasure to work with. In the end, if you take the draft you gave Nate and compare it with your finished book, you will be amazed just how much Nate, the coach, improved you and your writing.
— Cecil Homer
Nate quickly put me at my ease, helped by the fact that he writes poetry too. To a considerable extent he had rearranged my book, but in a way that made a lot of sense. It was reassuring that he was worried about how I might react. I had included too many poems, but I could never have been able to prune enough, while he had the objectivity to know what would fit, and cull what would not (including one or two poems I was quite attached to!). If I publish a further volume in the future, I would dearly like him to be involved.
— John Pare
Nate is both very professional and a very good listener. We developed an immediate rapport while he was making editorial suggestions for my book. I was impressed with how clearly he dealt with macro issues like overall structure and chapter organization. I was equally impressed with his many keen recommendations for improving the prose, especially for eliminating “dead” language. He has a poet’s ear for the subtleties of language and how it sounds. Highly recommended!
— David Linebarger

Nate made excellent suggestions for improving the flow of my storyline. Also, through his close reading he made sure my writing was accurate and consistent. His advice was invaluable.
— Jane Iwan
Nate is a professional. He is a storyteller’s and writer’s guiding light. He’ll take your rambling words and create a riveting story. His edits, suggestions and refinements will convert your written hopes into a quality book people will want to read.
— Rob Penfield
Nate had the difficult task to help me edit an English translation of my first novel. His insights and suggestions made for a better version of my manuscript. I would gladly work with him on another project.
— Eric Renaud, MD

Nate is a true professional. He offers constructive feedback that makes sense; he is quite helpful with his observational skill. Moreover, he is an engaging and honest editor, mature and thoughtful in his approach. My manuscript was much improved by his efforts.
— Doug Milam
Nate came to my novel when I thought it was well along in the development process, but still managed to guide me through some very constructive issues. I’ve found him to be a sharp and sensible editor who really knows his way around a manuscript.
— Jeff Meshel
I really appreciated Nate’s genuine interest and honesty during our sessions. When he made editing suggestions, I knew he had actually read my poetry manuscript thoroughly and was invested in helping me make my poetry book better.
— Bill Haywood

As this was my first book, I was apprehensive about having to not only talk with an editor on their level, but also be prepared to receive feedback, good or bad. The process with Nate over two meetings was seamless. I couldn’t have wished for a more thoughtful and knowledgeable partner in my journey.
— Allan Brodie
For me who does not speak English as my first language, Nate’s careful comments and advice were of great help, and his prompt and accurate correction requests based on his extensive knowledge were a great help in completing my book.
— Ducksoo Yi
In the final editing phases, prior to publication, Nate read my manuscript with extraordinary care and a critical eye for verisimilitude. He raised questions that prompted me to reconsider some areas of pace, point of view and dialogue. Extremely helpful.
— Richard P. Wenzel

I spent more than a dozen years researching and composing my memoir. Toward the end of that process, my sessions with Nate turned out to be a highlight of the experience. His ability to deep-read a manuscript on several levels makes his input extremely worthwhile.
— Ethan Hirsch
We deeply appreciate Nate’s editorial work on our Christmas anthology project. His ideas on the story sequence, structural changes, and the necessary rewrites improved the flow of the stories. His influence on simplifying our title was very helpful. We would welcome an opportunity to work with him again.
— Terry Broxon
It was a delight to work with Nate. Yes, he was good at identifying ways for my writing to be stronger and clearer. But, as importantly, he brought a real generosity of spirit to all our interactions. A great guide and editor. Really enjoyed working with him.
— Michael Stepniak

I recently worked with Nate in the process of publishing my first book. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I was very happy with the process. My first draft was in need of help, and he provided some excellent suggestions that I used to make some quality revisions to my novella. My second meeting with Nate was also productive, and I am well on my way to realizing completion of my literary work.
— Bland Weaver
Working with Nate on my novel was an excellent experience. Two things stand out for me: He identified structural changes that improved the book without suggesting that the story itself should change; and he gave me the confidence to create a more satisfying ending. I highly recommend him!
— J. T. Palter
I was referred to Nate by one of my cohort members. Choosing him was a great decision because he was so helpful and timely! He made sure to keep the integrity and voice of my paper, which I appreciated! I am recommending him to my other cohort members to edit their dissertation!
— Bianca McVade

Editing a collection of short stories into a book presents special challenges. Unlike a novel, there is no continuous narrative tying the whole thing together and there are far fewer characters than in short stories, where there are new characters in every chapter, each of whom wants star treatment. Nate had a strong sense for which stories fit best together and which stories didn’t belong. He had a keen eye for repetitions that occur when stories are written at different times and caught my seeming fixation with giving women names starting with “M”. His editorial skill and sensitivity to the text of each story has enabled them to put their best faces forward.
— W. A. Polf
I was referred to Nate by my husband who met him at a men’s retreat. My husband really liked Nate and thought he’d be a great guy to edit the book I was writing. He was 100% right. From the beginning, Nate has been incredibly professional, friendly, and created a safe space for giving me feedback. He has guided me through this intimidating experience of writing my first book, and helped me feel encouraged as well as inspired to see it through to the end. Nate’s extensive experience and expertise made this part of the journey feel easier. I’m very grateful for Nate’s work and look forward to working with him on future books.
— Whitney Roehl
In Nate I found an editor and colleague with a comprehensive knowledge of American literature and the art of teaching creative writing. I say ‘colleague’ because it was by the questions he raised about the text of my play and his inquiry into my artistic intentions and aims that I came to revise and improve the text of my play into what became the final version. His skillful deep reading was crucial help. Throughout my thirty-year career of college teaching I continuously sought out dialogue with a brother or sister instructor for mutual advancement in learning—people like Nate who is foremost among the expert editors I have known.
— Thomas Penn Johnson

Nate provided straightforward and specific ideas, which I quickly trusted due to his thorough preparation and non-directive but well developed suggestions. He helped me to streamline my book, strengthen its focus, and find the right ending. Plus, Nate was affirming and supportive of my efforts in the editorial process we followed. I felt like I had a great partner on my side.
— William Finger
I was pleased, indeed amazed, at Nate’s ability to see what I was trying to say and achieve in my novel and then walk me through the editorial process in a way that made my dream a reality. He seems to have a gift for seeing beyond a writer’s words and then turning the author’s story into one more believable, compelling, and readable.
— Kendall Blanchard
Nate was a responsible, sensitive, and reliable editor in helping me to revise my book in preparation for publication. His reading was sympathetic but judicious; he suggested changes but allowed me to decide whether and how to make them. And in my estimate his judgment was sound. I recommend him unreservedly.
— Alan Cohen

Nate has such a gift. He was able to take my choppy piece of writing and make it flow seamlessly. He was also very easy to work with and had my piece back to me earlier than I expected.
— Gwen French
Nate has the hard-to-find combination of academic rigor and heart. Throughout my manuscript he was able to improve my sentences while maintaining my voice as the storyteller. In his feedback about the overall story arc, and in the tedious copy edits, he offered valuable alternatives and explanations that helped me become a better writer.
— Carolyn Rohrbach
Nate brings a lot of experience and expertise with regard to sentence structure and correct grammatical delivery that enhances reader comprehension. Nate was immediate to respond and always available for my questions.
— Jeanette Jacobs

My publisher referred me to Nate while working on the second edition of my latest book. This is my sixth book, so I was pretty confident it was good to go after numerous read-throughs. Boy was I wrong! Aside from the standard editing ‘readability and grammar’ suggestions, Nate gave me incredible advice on structure, consistency, and parallelism that I never would have been able to do on my own. Nate’s guidance was invaluable and made my book significantly better. I would recommend Nate for any new book project and hope to work with him in the future.
— Steve Williams
Nate put my questions, worries, and doubts to rest with his professional editing of my first book. He not only understood my story and what I was trying to convey, but he made it clearer. He helped me as a memoir writer put my audience more into the scene while helping me balance theological reflection. It was truly a blessing working with him; I could not have asked for a better outcome.
— Samantha Cabrera
Working with Nate on my first book project has been an immensely rewarding experience. His approach to working with me was warm, pointed, informed, and deeply critical. His extremely wide reading of creative works and his keen attention to the kind of book I wanted to create were especially valuable. Nate listened very closely and carefully brought his experience in teaching creative writing to enhance my work. His guidance has been honest and thorough, and I’m very glad to have met him!
— Charleston Thomas
I’m a first-time book author with a hybrid publisher working on a non-fiction travel tome. As my developmental editor, Nate read my long manuscript numerous times and gave me very good advice on story length, chapter organization, and intellectual property issues, among other things. And because I’m an older guy who’s not too tech-savvy, he was very helpful and patient with my learning the basics of Word, which I hadn’t used before. I would definitely recommend him to another author.
— Charles Roamer
Nate was a fantastic editor: thoughtful, thorough, with great attention to detail. He has a critical eye for improving a manuscript and always returns a manuscript in a timely manner. An experienced writer himself, he knows how to give feedback effectively. Highly recommended!
— Father Albert Haase, OFM
As Nate’s former colleague, I knew I would use NLH Writing Services to help finalize my dissertation. Nate’s professionalism and superior editing services enabled me to achieve my academic goal. He edited my chapters meticulously and met with me to discuss any suggested changes to clarify and improve my writing. Nate made completing my dissertation easier, which gave me confidence in submitting my final dissertation. Thank you, Nate, for your help in my journey.
— Heather Soto

It was a great experience working with Nate on my novel. He provided excellent insight on some structural challenges I’d been having in a few parts. His creative ideas and overall support throughout the editing process helped ensure I was 100% pleased with the final manuscript. I look forward to working with Nate again on my next project.
— R. Conrad Speer
Many writers are professionals, but not professional writers. Nate is a professional writer, and has a gift for helping professional thinkers and practitioners become more professional as writers. He has not guided me to write like him, but to write like the best version of me. All that to say, he will help you write like you, only better.
— Austin Fischer
Nate aided tremendously with my manuscript, taking a clean, orderly approach in his feedback. He added order to my chaos, pruned the fluff, helped me find my voice, and made my message resoundingly more clear. His sharp skills are truly appreciated.
— Kyle Pierce

Nate knows how to make your writing better. Whether it’s fixing grammar or shortening run-on sentences, Nate will help you communicate your intended message clearly and effectively. His suggestions and edits brought greater clarity to my writing and helped make my research paper more accessible to the reader. The high degree of attention Nate puts into his work speaks volumes to who he is as a person and professional.
— Matthew Anderson
In our first meeting, Nate spent two hours taking a deep dive into the weaknesses of my manuscript. After our most enlightening session, I cut the manuscript by about ten percent, eliminating paragraphs and chapters superfluous to the story. He also helped identify problems with tense and structure. Even though it took me a few months to rework the memoir, it was significantly improved by his excellent editing skills.
— Bernard Ross
I had a wonderful experience woking with Nate. He communicates clearly and concisely, responds quickly after each manuscript revision, and is extremely professional and personable. As an author of several books in different disciplines, I’ve worked with other editors before, but this project was my memoir, and it had deep personal significance. Nate knew that. He treated the material with great awareness, was encouraging and sensitive, and offered excellent suggestions and advice during the entire process. I strongly recommend him.
— Bob Haddad

Nate wrought an outstanding job in editing my novel, ‘Adriel Peregrine.’ His notes about the draft were thoroughly prepared, indicating a careful reading of the manuscript. Our discussions about the book were extensive in their scope and detail. I never felt he was rushing me. In short, the novel is a better product as a result of his fine work.
— Michael G. Tavella
I had the great opportunity to work with Nate on my third novel, and I would happily work with him again for my fourth. He is personable, insightful, and encouraging, and worked with me in a collaborative fashion. My novel is definitely a better read with Nate’s input and editorial acumen.
— Milton C. Johns
Nate’s remarkable ability to deep-read has been a blessing. He let me stay in control of my own book, making only polite suggestions, such as expanding on certain moments that he (correctly) sensed were not yet finished. He was always able to understand the overall purpose of the story, and from the very beginning, he supported me, rooted for the story’s protagonists, and treated my craft choices with the utmost respect. I will definitely seek his help again in the near future.
— Jacob Reina
